In this presentation, Epic's Paulo Souza uses Unreal Engine's built-in AI features to build smart enemy behaviors for a game with stealth-like mechanics. By relying on the Gameplay Framework in Unreal, we're able to quickly create convincing AI using Behavior Trees. Behavior Trees are great for creating complex AI that can be presented in a way that is easy to understand and to debug. We also make our AI react to sight and hearing senses using the AI Perception System, but also adapt our Behavior Tree decision tree as well. In the end, we use the Environment Query System to allow our AI to be aware of the world geometry before deciding the next move, making it look way smarter than it actually is. Project Files: 🤍 . This is episode 44 of the third-person shooter series based on Unreal Advanced Locomotion System. Previously we implemented some environment queries to get some locations such as cover locations. But these EQS ran independently on each AI character's behavior trees. They don't have any mutual awareness of what other characters are doing. Because of that, when there is a major threat like an explosion sound, all of them try to move into the same location for searching. When there are multiple AI enemies present, they tend to flock into the same location. Today, we will look into how to run an environment query to identify locations around the threat and share the results with multiple AI characters, and only one of the enemies will go to the exact threat location, while others go around that point to cover a wider area. This will demonstrate more intelligent team dynamics from AI characters in the game. This video discusses pathfinding and the "Navmesh" in the Unreal Engine. It is part of a series on Artificial Intelligence in the Unreal Engine, and discusses (briefly) the in-built pathfinding provided, and the need for a special asset which describes the possible places an AI agent can reach, called the "navmesh" (Navigation Mesh) and shows some basics in creating and altering the navmesh. It was created using UE4.26 but the process is the same in earlier versions of the engine.
